Gir Pavilion
Located at Girtara, a private resort owned by Reliance near Junagadh, Gujarat, the 3900 sq.ft. Coolant Pavilion is conceived as an open-plan climatic structure that explores the intersection of natural systems, material intelligence, and sustainable engineering. The pavilion’s form is inspired by the elegant curves and natural beauty of a flower petal, utilizing a hyperbolic paraboloid shape to create a visually harmonious structure.
The structure draws on the principles of soap bubble minimal surfaces for a lightweight, strong, and resilient build that optimizes material use. The exterior features terracotta tiles meticulously arranged in a flower fractal pattern, echoing self-similar designs found in nature. This arrangement adds warmth, texture, and contributes to the structural coherence of the design, while the terracotta material ensures durability and sustainability.
In response to climate change, the project re-adapts traditional techniques to achieve thermal comfort. By employing passive energy strategies and regional materials such as terracotta, the design reduces embodied energy and environmental impact. The pavilion aspires to be a simple, artistic, and effective cooling solution “made by earth,” akin to the climatically sensitive structures created by ants.
