Twin Toilet

The Twin Toilets project serves as a profound architectural intervention that redefines the marginalized status of service spaces, transforming them from neglected utilities into responsive, dignified environments that challenge long-standing societal stigmas. By juxtaposing functional necessity with an innovative, environmentally conscious design, the project invites users into a space where the cylindrical form—meticulously constructed from tactile materials like broken bricks and terracotta—creates a visually soft and approachable presence that contrasts with the sterile harshness often associated with public facilities. This spatial sensitivity is further emphasized by the entrance’s intentionally lower height, which orchestrates a smoother, more compressed transition from the vastness of the outdoors into the sanctuary of the toilet. At the heart of this design, the gabion wall serves a dual purpose: it acts as a functional biological air purifier through an integrated system lying beneath it and mobilizes a sensory, atmospheric experience intended to leave a lasting impact on the user. The project even goes as far as to glorify the open drain, a bold move that seeks to dignify the mechanical lifeblood of the building and mark the vital importance of service infrastructure in our daily lives. By rejecting total enclosure and keeping the volume open from above, the architecture creates a breathable, semi-private space that utilizes visually lighter materials to offer comfort, ultimately blurring the boundary between human activity and the natural world to foster a genuine, sustainable coexistence where the user is encouraged to linger rather than rush.
