With Noida Factory, we explored the possibility of rethinking industrial architecture as an environmentally responsive system rather than a purely mechanical enclosure. Conceived as a subterranean yarn mill, the project investigates how passive design strategies and the thermal intelligence of the earth can become integral to the manufacturing process itself.
Yarn is highly sensitive to fluctuations in temperature and humidity, making environmental regulation one of the most energy-intensive aspects of textile manufacturing. In response, the design adopts a subterranean approach that uses the thermal mass of the earth to naturally stabilize internal temperatures and create controlled production environments.
Inspired by anthills and termite mounds, conical ventilation structures emerge from the ground to facilitate natural airflow and introduce diffused daylight into the underground workspace. Above ground, a stilted superstructure incorporates deep shading devices and strategically oriented openings to minimize solar gain and encourage continuous ventilation, allowing the architecture to function as a unified passive climatic system.
