Shaheed Smarak
The Shahid Smarak Parisar at Atal Nagar is envisioned as a commemorative landscape that honours the courage and sacrifice of the martyrs of Chhattisgarh while creating a new civic identity for the emerging capital city. Spread across a 42-acre site divided by a natural water canal and anchored by an existing lake, the proposal transforms the terrain into a contemplative public realm where memory, movement and landscape are deeply interwoven.
At the heart of the design stands the Shahid Smarak — an iconic inverted tulip form gently bowing in reverence to the martyrs. Conceived as a symbolic gesture of respect and remembrance, the sculptural structure emerges as a powerful visual landmark for Nava Raipur while embodying humility, sacrifice and resilience. Adjacent to the memorial lies the Amar Jawan Jyoti and the Wall of Martyrs, where the names of fallen heroes are inscribed within rising landscape elements that appear to emerge from the earth itself.
A network of meandering pedestrian pathways weaves through the site, carefully framing views of the memorial, water bodies and ceremonial grounds. These landscaped walkways create moments of pause, reflection and gathering, transforming the memorial into both a civic park and a ceremonial space. The parade ground, seating terraces, buglers’ platforms and ceremonial stage are seamlessly integrated within the landscape, allowing national events and public commemorations to unfold within a setting that is solemn, immersive and deeply connected to the cultural identity of Chhattisgarh.
